Want to make the simplest kind of change in your home, but one with maximum impact, both in terms of brightening up your space and your mood? Find a few small flower vases or other vessels and put them on your window sill at your kitchen sink. If you don’t have a window at your sink, find some counter space for them. Put in a few sprigs of fresh or dried flowers. They could be something from your garden, or that you found along the roadside, or a few inexpensive sprigs from the market. Make sure to include buds so that you can watch them bloom. Keep something in the vases all year round. In the winter I use a sprig of holly berries, or even just some decorative twigs.
Then, when you are doing the dishes or washing vegetables, you can really look at them. Georgia O’Keeffe said she painted her flowers so large because no one ever really stopped to look at a flower, and she wanted to make sure they did. Once you introduce some flowers to your window sill, you will be looking all the time. Minimum cost, maximum impact – on both your mind and your spirit!
